ARTS AND ANTHROPOLOGY
ONLINE SEMINAR

There is a powerful relationship between cultural diversity and human creativity. Artistic production speaks as much about aspects of a society’s way of life, as it does about the human mind and its perceptual and emotional relationships. The Anthropology of Art and the Ethnography of artistic processes, open the possibility of understanding the creative process, the action of creating, in direct relation with the human cognitive system and its context. The Anthropology of Art enables new ways of understanding relationships: art-knowledge, art-context, art-interaction and art-community.

In this course we propose to think of anthropological research as a creative act that provides specific tools and reflective skills that enhance the production of interdisciplinary projects, at the crossroads between contemporary artistic languages and practices, and the anthropological gaze.

We seek to respond to the questions and needs of contemporary artistic practices and anthropological research around the possibility of thinking about the artistic process as a generator of knowledge and as a result of different forms of collaboration and community.

OPEN CALL

“ARTS AND ANTHROPOLOGY” online seminar, is an interactive learning experience, in which participants acquire an interdisciplinary professional preparation that opens up many possibilities for the creation of projects, field work, artistic production, analysis and documentation. It is an original and unique program, in which anthropological research and the languages of art are brought together. It is integrated by 6 modules, in each of which skills are developed, work is done through exercises and the application of concepts is encouraged. It is a wonderful experience with audio, written and audiovisual materials to download and explore.

It is taught entirely online. It offers intensive and specialized training in Anthropology of Art.

OBJECTIVE

Generate a process of mutual enrichment of both anthropological and artistic practice, and provide research tools and reflective skills to the participants so as to develop critical thinking that responds to specific contexts, integrates diverse knowledge and dialogue with communities outside the field of art, in order to enhance the production of interdisciplinary projects at the intersection between anthropology and the arts.

METHODOLOGY

From a reflective review of the relationships between the Anthropology of Art and other disciplines such as Sociology, Semiotics, Philosophy, History, Cognitive Sciences; we will discuss the differences and intersections that occur within this interdisciplinary field. The contributions and applications of Anthropology of Art will be understood, and the relationship between anthropological and artistic research will be specifically addressed. We will work with the idea of displacement, travel and migration in relation to the possibility of having other readings on the artistic process and context. We will approach the practice of a multi-local, dialogical and artistic ethnography, and we will carry out multiple exercises and practice the interdisciplinary dimension of ethnography and the field diary, expanding the possibilities of transcendence to other languages, such as sound and audiovisual.

We will analyze projects and think about the community from the learning processes, the processes of collaboration and co-creation in artistic practices, the community in indigenous contexts and the vision of Anthropology of Art from Latin America. It is about understanding the artistic process linked to specific social contexts and issues to generate a complex vision of the relationship between art and anthropology.

TEACHER:

DR. PATRICIA TOVAR.

Researcher, anthropologist and artist. She has a PhD in Anthropology and has specialized in Anthropology of Art; she did a post-doctorate at UNAM with the project: transdisciplinary complexity and co-creation processes between science, arts and design. In the last 14 years, she has developed projects in community art, relational art and transdiscipline, in which diverse forms of collaboration are produced and specific methodologies are generated. Her work focuses on linking anthropological research with processes of creation in community and producing forms of collective thought, activating reflective processes and generating scientific and artistic results.

COORDINATION

The interactive online seminar in Anthropology of Art is an educational project created by LATIR:  Transdisciplinary Laboratory founded in 2015 and legally constituted in Mexico City. Our main objective is to contribute to social transformation and generate networks of knowledge, co-creation and re-invention, as well as exchange and documentation that promote the development of cultural, artistic and scientific projects with a transdisciplinary approach. We started our distance education project in 2017 as a space in which open and flexible learning processes could be generated, that would cross cultural and socio-political borders.
